View Full Version : Lift your game, whoever you are
Been on this forum a long time, and I've never seen it so dead. What are you doing to increase traffic here? Are you promoting the forum in the magazine?
Give people a reason to come here, please. It is (or was) a great community of gamers, casual and hardcore..
Even if only one out of every 20 people that signs up on this forum after being redirected from the magazine isn't a tard, it'd still be better than what's going on now (total, absolute tumbleweed farm)
Or is that the plan, to let this place slowly die

I think there should be wholesale promotion of Legendary Forum Members (LFM) such as myself through the print magazine.
A selection of my more worthy posts covering a six-page full-colour spread and a series of emo black & white photographs of me in a beret and scarf should get the traffic flowing in here again.
My usual fee applies.

To be honest the new 'owners' or shall we call him 'dude' has been treated like shit by some for no other reason than previous editors and depts leaving and then they have to step in so I cant really see them making massive steps to save something that is ultimately negative towards them for no good reason. Change is a part of life and shit happens so people either move on and change with the times or they get runover and forgotten. I like the new Hyper look so I for one have been a reader since the start and will continue to be a reader. Heck come to think of it some haters in here DONT even read the dam mag. Yes the warm and fuzzies of a Hyper may be gone but really this has happened alot of times in the past way before some posters even knew what hyper was so it doesnt change anything in the long scheme of things. IMO anyway. I also get the idea of being emotional about things we like but there is a right and a wrong way to go about such things.

2. Post more relevant posts
3. Ignore the people with keyboards surgically attached to their bodies who sit waiting, no lurking - to attack people out of sheer boredom in some effort to make themselves appear superior or better or argue semantics for the sake of it and make little to no effort to be helpful or friendly, especially not to new forum members, and who subscribe to the forum jerk manifesto.

Hi Ghosty.
... You honestly expect 'things' to be done that haven't been done in years?
If I was to take a stab I'd say that a majority of the older lot have grown up and are too busy. We've been relegated to those casual browsing types.
As for new members, maybe this place is just suffering from there being too many online forums and hyper not providing any real additional incentive to choose it over the others. I've always said that they need to integrate the forum into the mag a little more. It's a sure fire way to garner more interest in both the mag and forum and will also go some way to promoting actual discussion.
When I was admin, I had lined up advertising deals with companies which would pass on exclusive discounts to our members... But next marketing had a hissy fit over that one, claiming they were already doing something of the sort (which never happened).
The power in promoting this forum lies solely in the hands of those responsible for the mag... And unfortunately there's always been a disconnect between the two. If it weren't for the effort of a few unpaid 'civilians' this place would've fallen apart and been closed down years ago.
Thanks for a proper response, Manny.
And your reply was sort of what I was getting at..surely promoting the forum in the magazine would only increase sales for the magazine in the long run anyway

My thoughts exactly Manny.
It would be great if Hyper took a more active role in promoting the forums, but A. Fordham was so unimpressed with all of the shit that went down in the dude and feedback threads after he took over the editorship that I think he potentially sees the forum as dangerous to the magazines image, so I think more promotion from Next is probably unlikely.
And ghosty, I care!
It seems that after we implemented the latest, more "hands off" approach to moderating (as requested by some members and mods)the active forum members seem to have started posting even less... I don't know if that is in any way connected though.

Surprised this hasn't been picked up on.
A few thoughts/observations;
1. If Aford is so unimpressed with the Hyper forums then the only rightful thing for him to do is to discontinue this forum completely and start a new forum with the appropriate members and format that DOES impress him.
2. Alternatively, Aford could just put away his obviously huge ego after being called out for being a pretentious tosspot and realise this forum goes better without his presense and actively promote the forum in the magazine like a normal, stable business-savvy editor should.
Alternately, of course, the people who got so bent out of shape without any prompting and abused and ridiculed him before he'd even released an issue of the magazine, cast him as a villain when in reality he was probably more like a pawn in the whole thing (interestingly, often the same people who spent years bitching about Wilks & co as well), could pull their heads in and start interacting with people with a modicum of decorum. But as if that's ever gonna happen.
Personally I'm not sold on the new direction of the magazine, but I'm not prepared to slander a man I don't know before I've even seen what he produces (and one issue released during a period of obvious chaos and change is NOT enough to judge him on). But it seems like I'm in the minority.

Really if anyone wants more members here then maybe they should post some unique and interesting topics in the hope that people googing those same topics end up here and decide to stay.
I know that we have a tendency to have mega-threads here but maybe we should do away with that idea and let people post new threads that may partially cover what another thread covers rather than jumping straight to "OMG THIS MENTIONS THE WII WHY CAN'T IT GO IN THE WII THREAD I'M MERGING IT NOW OMG"
But really, what does the casual browser see when they come here? Bitching, trolling, discussions about pep, simpsons screenshots and masses and masses of injokes (yes I know I am also guilty of those things) all jump out and take the attention away from anything else.
It's easy to blame Anthony or Next or Jay, but we're all the ones making the posts here so the quality of the forums comes down to all of us.

Sorry Jay, he shouldn't have even made himself a presense in here. Maybe one introductory post and that's it, but to carry on feeding the fish in his subsequent posts was a definite business no-no and I think he realised that pretty quick but unfortunately the impression we made on him gave him butthurt.

I agree, as long as they're not so all encompassing that they exclude new members. I've been here 5 years and I still don't get 90% of Simpsons pictures posted. I've come to view them as some kind of ironic meta-joke that's deliberately not funny. During the Shea regime the magazine suffered a similar direction.
I also agree that Anthony probably didn't help himself by continuing to engage with the torrent of abuse, but he was probably doing it in good faith, attempting to open a dialogue.
I don't know, I can understand him being sore after what people levelled at him. Most who did so wouldn't have had Laz's supreme knowledge of the life and times of Mr A Fordham to base their criticisms on, you can be sure of that.

I don't get half the injokes either, I just glaze over them because I see them so often.
Once I took a look at PCPowerplay after having not been there for years, some new guy had posted a thread asking an innocent yet noobish question and he was ridiculed and the thread soon filled with injoke pictures which I'm sure were hilarious to the people posting them, but all I could think was "Is this what people see when they are new to Hyper?"

For people who'd like to see more mag-forum interaction. What exactly do you have in mind?
The only problem I have with putting the forum in the mag is that you're effectively publishing redundant information that can be found for free on the internet. Sure, people might post better if there's a chance of getting something they say published in the mag, but that's kinda the point of the quotes in the letters/feedback pages.
Would you like more writers to pop in and post? More threads asking for specific feedback or even stuff like reader/forum reviews? I think Wilks tried to organise some forum Q&As with publishers - was that something that might be of interest?
Lazlow
04-08-2010, 08:24 PM
IIRC there were two sidebars in the letters section that used forum quotes; one was devoted to feedback on the previous issue, the other was a randomly selected game related topic.
Drop the former (it comes across as an ego stroke) if it hasn't been already, and expand on the latter (pretty much what Edge do). Even if specific topics are created by magazine staff that may coincide with upcoming features.
The Dev/Pub Q&A was a good idea that seemed to be received well, but it was short lived. It'd be good to see it revived though. If a complete feature is impractical maybe annouce an upcoming scheduled interview and take a handful of Q's from the forum.
Essentially anything that may engage the reader, there's generally a influx of newbies around GOTY polling time.

I’ve traditionally been against the idea of merging the sub-forums NeoGaf style, but I think that it may help.
We could try three forums: gaming, off topic and buy/sell.
I think most people here are multiplatform gamers, but they may only regularly log into one sub-forum (i.e. Xbox general). If there was one general games forum they may been enticed to post in the Nintendo, PC, handheld and Sony related threads.
Similarly for the non game related forums, people may log into film and tv regularly, but neglect the current off-topic forum and the sports forum. Having a list of threads in front of them may prompt them to promote discussion on those threads.
I think that in the least it will give the illusion that the forum is more active than it actually is, which may entice lurkers to sign up and contribute.
3 sub forums would be a great idea - it would at least give the illusion of more traffic.

Its not the forums ITS THE PEOPLE IN IT. Dam look at yourselves guys dont blame anyone else. Thats the problem. Perfect example was the thread regarding playing Borderlands for the BENEFIT of sick kids. All bullshit aside if you didnt agree you just ignore the thread and get on with your lives but no, a select few abused the bloke to know end, did he slap your mothers no. All he did was start a thread with an outcome to HELP KIDS, idiots in here just went postal as they always do whenever somebody they dont know types anything in here. They then camped their forums etc thinking they were cool posting back that their response was to say that they think posters in the Hyper forums were dicks (which you were). FFS get over yourselves. REGARDLESS OF YOUR OPINIONS IT WAS ABOUT HELPING SICK KIDS thats was it. If they made $30 or $3000 it was a good cause and you idiots you know who you are acted like dicks. Its the same all over these forums. The worse thing ever was to bring back the EPENIS ratings. If the new Hypercrew wanna clean up this place get rid of them. If the only reason you are here is to gain lil green squares you arent welcome. Same as the hate towards 'dude' he did fk all and was hated for hating sake.

If I disagree with something, should I just sit quiet and take it in the butt (no offense to anyone who does) instead of expressing my opinion and what I believe in?
As for camping their forum, I did no such thing. For once I'd like to see you back up your wild accusations with some hard proof. If not, I move that you should receive an infraction for harassment.

For a mod you are ignorant to what goes on in these forums.

Listen for once, REQUIEM, unless you can present some evidence to back your claim that popular forum moderator, Watchers, is in fact part of a speculated 'problem' (which you have yet to define. Please do.), then I'm afraid your arguments will once again fall flat.

Watchers is a fantastic moderator actually. The team we have currently are fairly solid. How is he specifically part of the problem? Prove it champ.
