View Full Version : 3DS vs NGP - Which has blown your socks off?

Now we have a clearer picture of whay Sony and Nintendo are offering its time to pick sides.
I want an iPad but I don't want an iPad. I think the NGP will fill that gap nicely.

They're both worthless gimmicks. But at least the NGP is interesting, 3DS is a joke.

My vote definitely goes for the NGP, but at the same time my socks are still firmly wrapped around my feet. It's good but nothing I've seen so far has been worth writing home about.

I've never bought into the Cult of Nintendo, with their major franchises never really capturing my interest.
I genuinely feel the NGP presnts more promise than the 3DS, which to me simply feels like another DS with a gimmick.

NGP sounds superior as a machine but the 3DS will probably end up with better pricing and more (good) games.

I'm keen for both.
While I don't care much for what sounds like very fiddly 3D, the eShop, analogue stick and what will hopefully be over a hundred quality games (if it follows the DS' trend, of course) make it my personal most-wanted. However, the region locking and battery life are lame.
The NGP looks fantastic and sounds like it has a lot of potential - and 3G - but I'm sceptical about the software lineup (It has the horsepower to handle ports of games I'm already playing on my 360, hooray -_-), the battery life, and the controls (dual analogue or not, those sticks look an awful lot like the shitty PSP ones). It better be region-free, too. Then I'll be sold on it.

So you don't want analogue sticks then?

Single-stick games are fine. Dual analogue games are where the problem lies, and there haven't been many good dual analogue controllers.
Good sticks:

All the sticks were perfectly fine for single stick games (GCN was the best ftr). Dual analogue games, such as FPS, were hampered by the bottom two.
I'm really interested to see if devs can implemented a DS-like FPS control scheme using the back touchscreen.

The NGP has impressed me more, but the 3DS I think will be harder to tell until I actually play one and see how well the 3D effect works. At the moment screens and videos just show graphics that the PSP has been giving us for years.

I don't have a 360 but I'll probably buy one because I still want to play banjo kazooie 3. And xbox arcade shit.
But the psp2 will be good for sitting in my bed playing games and going on the internet hopefully.
I liked both consoles, but honestly when comparing ds and psp i prefer psp at the moment because the ds games DONT GO DOWN IN PRICE EVER.
I still haven't played the two zelda games on it because i'm not paying 60 dollars for an old game.

The 360 sticks are great because they're concave, that's all. The original Dual Analog Controller actually had these as well, but for some retarded reason they were scrapped when the Dual Shock came out and changed to convex.
FUN FACT TRIVIA TIME!
The original Japanese version of the Dual Analog Controller had the vibration that we know and love in the Dual Shocks, but was removed for the everywhere-else version as the Japs thought it detracted from the analog controls. Not everyone agreed though, and there are a small handful of games that have secret (and archaic) vibration support despite pre-dating the Dual Shock. Porsche Challenge is one such game, and it will cause a Dual Shock to vibrate despite (just) pre-dating it and the case having no mention of vibration support whatsoever. Apparently the work of a renegade developer.

I entered a V-Rally + Dual Analog competition through Hyper or OAPSM, and won, but by the time winners were announced they had pulled Dual Analog support from V-Rally, so the magazine sent me a NEGCON instead.

In my opinion, one thing Nintendo has always done right is their handhelds, they always have a solid line up of games and even when i was a kid Pokemon was all I needed.
I'll probably get the NGP if a few games come out that interest me, however as of now i will only be owning a 3DS, it has a solid line up already Street Fighter 4, Legend of Zelda OoT, Starfox, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Mario Kart, Phoenix Wright x Professor Layton, Resident evil and the not confirmed but obvious choices of more Zelda, Final Fantasy, Pokemon, Mario and various other titles.

Blind faith, the amount of people saying "It's Nintendo, so it must be good" forgetting that a few weeks ago they were bitching and moaning about region locking, friend codes and battery life. As soon as a competitor comes into the picture, it's a different story.
Both are appealing, eventually I'll get the two of them. For now, I can play the next Pokemon on my current DS.

It wont have graphics that will rival the PS3. I don't understand where you heard that it would. They've been saying it will be like a PS3 but portable, likely meaning the PSN aspects of it. If anything it will be between the PS2 and PS3 graphically.

Sony said the NGP rivals the graphical power of the PlayStation 3, and the company proved it. Sony released a trailer that showed off several key titles, including: Hot Shots Golf Next (http://psp.ign.com/objects/098/098901.html), Killzone (http://psp.ign.com/objects/098/098899.html), LittleBigPlanet, WipEout (http://psp.ign.com/objects/098/098910.html), Resistance (http://psp.ign.com/objects/098/098912.html), Hustle Kings (http://psp.ign.com/objects/098/098916.html), and Uncharted Portable (http://psp.ign.com/objects/019/019533.html).

In terms or raw power it won't match, but to present something similar to a PS3 scaled down to a portable screen it wouldn't need as much grunt as a PS3 anyway.
The PSP wasn't as powerful as a PS2 but still managed to present PS2 quality games on the handheld. Sometimes there was a little more popup (hello GTA games) but it was roughly equivalent.
I'm expecting a similar deal with the NGP.
Of more interest - to me at least - is how they will integrate the touch screen and the rear control methods. As someone who has long had an interest in rear control methods of course. :p

Both look extremely awesome in their own respects. I mean seriously, I wouldn't have imagined Nintendo being the first to 3D with no glasses handheld. Equally, the tech specs of the NGP is drool worthy.
On the other hand, the prices are going to be a kill joy. I also have a huge DS catalog I need to finish anyway, so the odds of me buying one anytime soon is like nill. Last thing I need is another situation of games needing to be played overflowing. I have PC games going all the way back to 2000 I need to play, tons of 360/Wii games, and another two games for the PS3 (most of the "blockbuster" games I can usually beat in 10-12 hours so I'd just hire a lot of them).
Combined with my other hobbies . . . I question if I should even consider myself a gamer in some respects anymore. I think life finally caught up with me >_>'

There is no UMD backwards compatibility of any kind on NGP. The only way you will be playing that game on NGP is by purchasing it again as a download from the PSN store (assuming that title is available as a download, not all PSP games are).
