An adventure detective style game that looks pretty cool..
Screens and Video (http://e3src.nintendo.com/games/ds/hotel_dusk_room_215/)
Presented in the same side on style as Brain Training.

It's being made by CING, same dudes behind Another Code on DS, and featuring a similar style of mystery story-driven gameplay apparently.
I enjoyed Another Code, so we'll see how this pans out.
Yes, Another Code was a lot of fun (if short, which is certainly not a problem for me, rather an observation) and really used the DS's unique capabilities well. The video looks interesting - vaguely reminiscent of Farenheit I thought - so this could be one to watch out for. Thank God for the DS - it (and the upcoming Wii (and to a lesser extent Live Arcade)) has really rejuvenated my interest in my favourite hobby (which, of course, is pottery).

Another Code was good, although a somewhat forgetable experience. I'll keep an eye on this one though. It'll probably be worth playing.

Not a sequel, a new game from the creators of Another Code.
You should definitely play Another Code some time though if you are into adventure games. It is thoroughly imperfect - mainly that it is too short, but it also has a couple of peculiarities that make you wonder - but as an introduction into what the DS could do for point and click adventuring, it's brilliant. Some people like it less than others, but I loved it, there were puzzles that revolved around the physical nature of the DS itself which were pretty ingenious.
Hopefully Hotel Dusk will maintain the quality with the wrinkles ironed out, perhaps by the hotel laundry lady, perhaps a mysterious, potentially murderous laundry lady.

Nope, its not a sequel its just from the same developers :)
From the sounds of it Hotel Dusk is getting a lot more of a positive responce than the mixed responce of Another Code, sounds like Hotel Dusk is the superior game, interestingly you hold the DS like a book Brain Training style in this game :D

Well, I grabbed Another Code the other day, and i'm loving it. A little light on the puzzles so far, but the story is really intriguing, and the overall style of the game is executed perfectly. Gives a real sense of curiosity in regards to what is happening on Blood Edward Island (although I think I may have already predicted the tie in to the main character).
Can't wait to finish this off then and start the sequel ;)

I got my copy today courtesy of VG+ and wow I'm impressed. It's a more adult game than Another Code and is VERY heavy on dialogue between characters. The art style is phenomenal, the music is excellent and the 3D environments look great.
Since dialogue is so heavy in the game, you actually have to know when to "press" on a particular topic to eak out some mroe information. Although doing so might irritate the characters and give you a Game Over if they finally give up on co-operating with you. The script is very sharp and characters are fully fledged creations.
I'm still early on so it's still early to really critique the game. But the art style has won me over already.
More as I get deeper.

Ha ha, you're right. But the art direction helps me overlook the fact that for large chunks of time I am not really doing very much. I was reminded very early on of a scene from the movie 'Big', the Tom Hanks one where he is a little boy in a man's body and he gets a job inventing toys after dancing on a piano with an old man. One of the toys he invents is a digital comic book which offered the reader Choose Your Own Adventure Style choices. Hotel Dusk - at least early on - feels like the natural extension of that idea.
Only thing I'm not too sure about at the moment is the fact that movement is handled by the touch screen but shown (in 3D) on the other screen. With the system being held sideways it's difficult to watch the sweet 3D action - I spend my whole time staring at the rudimentary top down map. Still, very stylish so far, though I stopped not far in to it as I had a 6:30 rise this morning.

Ok picked this up today, left FFXII for the holidays when I have the time and energy for level-upping characters,
So far I'm about 45 mins in and warming up to it quite nicely.
The visual style was always going to kick ass and it doesn't fail to impress. Very noir, drawing insperations from flicks like Once Upon A Time In America, Taxi Driver or The Maltiese falcon mes think? Even reminds me a lil of Dr Catz thanx to the vibrateing chara-sketchs. Loving the use of color and black'n'white to set the mood and atmopshere of a deeply depressed, isolated and lonely man whos still a BADASS!
Was a bit worried about the story as Another Code (which is actually the only DS game I didnt trade in) was passable at best but HD251s is compelling so far.
On the subject of Another Code this feels like the un-offical sequal thanks to a similar control method, puzzles that break out a stylus rash but at the same time is introduces enough elements to remain fresh like the new veirw and of course graphics.
More soon!

Got this game yesterday, and I'm up to chapter 3. The game is very much linear series of advents rather than a game like Zelda or something. Awesome though. Judging from the (excellent) story, the game really is a novel with interactive elements. The idea that the next time I play this game there could be a completely different turn of events decided by how I answer these questions sounds aces too!

You can use the dpad to walk around so you can walk around while watching the screen. Be careful though as the dpad control isn't like the standard FPS pivot style. It makes your character face whatever direction your push in.

Yeah Two memories controls were better, but if 251 was in 3rd person I feel it would isolate the player from the main character Kyle.
Added with the classic noir narration the through his eyes type approach works.

Loving this game so far, though it gets annoying when I'm stuck on a puzzle or nothing seems to happen because I havent looked at something to trigger an event :P But thats simply the nature of how these types of games work.
But yes its great, art style rocks, interesting story, and the main character Kyle is a refreshing character to play as in a Nintendo game

Something I'm actually quite dissapionted about is the lack gameplay that uses the versitility of the DS.
In another code I was slipping and sliding with the touch-screen, blowing into tha microphone etc etc at often intervals but so far I've only seen two puzzles (the jig saw and the takeing notes) that seperate this from being possible on PSP.

Yeah, just wait. They're coming. One puzzle I immediately recognised from Another Code, and another one that I didn't think was physically possible with the DS hardware. The mic also comes into play... >.>
I'm getting stuck into Chapter 7 at the moment. Woke up this morning, picked up the DS, and started playing from the start of Chapter 1. Haven't put it down since. ;)

I'm up to Chapter 4 now, slowly completing it at a comfortable pace. Some of the puzzles have been pretty annoying with one in particular that doesn't give you any clue of how to complete it! Had to resort to GameFAQ for that one and then there was one very cheeky puzzle involving creativity with the touchscreen. Granted, I wasn't stuck on that for more than a couple of minutes, but it still manage to baffle me.
Only had the Game Over screen appear once so far and to be honest, it was an utterly stupid reason to be chucked out of the Hotel.

Aaaand... all done.
Started the game at 9:30AM this morning, finished it at 11:00PM. I've had the DS on playing it for the whole day (ran out of battery twice, had to play tethered to the wall).
It was... well... I don't know if I liked it or not. To be honest, I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as Another Code. Some of the puzzles were devilishly creative, but wading through an hour of text to get to a 10 second puzzle isn't exactly my idea of compelling gameplay. As pointed out in some reviews, it feels like a mystery novel with interactive elements.
Would I recommend it? Probably not. Unless you're a huge fan of mystery novels or ye olde Lucasarts point-and-click adventures, there's not going to be a lot here for you.
Interesting report Bronze, and good work for ploughing through in a day! I'm enjoying it so far, but, as you suggest, I would like a bit more actual gaming. I think treating it as an interactive graphic novel is not a bad approach to take.

I'm on Chapter 7 now, loving the game, but yeah interactive graphic novel is probably a better word for it, not that its a bad thing as its something different, if you want an actual video game this isnt for you, but there is an interesting story here, Another Code would be better for the puzzles but Hotel Dusk is better for story and characters, Another Code didnt even really have any characters :P
I just finished reading the Eurogamer review http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=73287 (John Walker, who I find a bit shit to be honest, and he has a cynical crack at Another Code so he can truly **** off). I'm still loving this game, but there's a few things I have a problem with:
- The puzzle in the electrical room. It seems to be there purely so Cing can say "Hey, look, bet you didn't know we could do this!". Plot wise, it makes no sense that no one figured out to do this beforehand, and it's surprisingly ineffective on the touch screen.
-Writing in the notebook is an awesome idea, but the connection between the stylus and the screen seems off. Is this just me, or is the stuff getting written *below* where everyone else is trying to write it as well?
-I got a 'Game Over' screen last night for making one wrong decision in a conversation, after which Kyle, instead of asking the question again, went back to his room, too embarrassed to leave for the rest of the night. Horribly out of character.
Still, very much enjoying it despite these issues.

Damn that electrical room puzzle, I actually tried the "solution" pretty early but it didnt work, so I figured you couldnt do that on the DS touch screen, only when I read a FAQ I realised that I was right all along only I didnt do it right :P
I'm being intentially vague here to avoid spoilers, if you have completed the puzzle you'll know what I mean.
Thanks for your vagueness guys - much appreciated. Haven't got there yet. Intrigued now... :)

Good game, not great.
If you have played a lot of Japanese adventure games in the past (including those by cing and others) they have a very distinctive way of playing with the genre and it is not particularly inventive. Yes it is meant to be a story driven genre but it is also meant to be a game and the whole stop/start nature of progression in the game works against it. Even Dreamfall has more game than this and that is saying something.
I'm up to chapter four at the moment and while the storyline is definately intriguing (I've just had the big reveal conversation with you know who regarding Hyde's past) I do feel more like I'm reading a story (with a FREAKING SLOW START) than I am playing a game.
I'll definately complete it, it is engaging enough for me to do that. Despite my initial desire to smack Hyde upside the head a few times for being such a rude grumpy prick I'm really warming to him and his motivation, Louis DeNonno too.
I just feel it keeps shooting itself in the foot and is far too reliant on the trappings of the Japense style of adventuring that western adventure game developers such as Sierra and more obviously Lucasarts were able to avoid early on. It is a game which is so modern in so many respect yet so trapped in the past I find it hard to really love it but at the same time difficult to disregard.
I think the 7/10 score from Eurogamer is on the money.

09-03-2007, 12:04 AM
Yeah, it's not really a "game" , more like as has been said before an interactive graphic novel, perhaps not a bad thing, but if you after some sort of gaming experience, there isn't too much here.

Here here, I'm currently halfway through Chapter 6 and there's a scene where Iris walks into the bar, she asks if she can have a drink with you and your choices are "No way!" or "No thanks." C'mon! Can't he at least try to pickup on a good-looking chick?
Bourbon - check.
Bar - check.
Empty bar with girl - check.
Maybe we find out later Hyde's actually gay and gets it on with writer Summer *shuddders*. Unfortunately I completely forgot to turn on the tv between 7-9pm at the front desk so I missed that opportunity. Also with the vending machine I forgot to get some loose change at the beginning, now there's nobody at the front desk to get coins off. I've got all the numbers from around the Hotel, I just can't use them.
Does anyone know if you can still use them at a later time? It's 9.20 game time atm. I'm really enjoying this, but not as a game. Like everyone said it's more like an engaging book with interactivity

I yelled it again emphatically when i actually found out who she was. What really pissed me off is that he's so nice to the annoying, decrepit old lady with the eye patch. I loved it at first, being a wannabe adventure game connoisseur but it's making it very difficult with how slow the text is. I don't know how to explain it but it seems to take ages to fast forward past the text and for it to show up on screen. I remember having to redo a huge part of Vampire Bloodlines and i was scrolling through the text like crazy and was back to where i needed to be in no time. If i did that in Hotel Dusk it'd seemingly take hours.
Really, i'm saying this now, all adventure games MUST feature text that can scroll faster than the average person can read, after this game i just can't stress that enough.

Does anyone know if you can still use them at a later time? It's 9.20 game time atm. I'm really enjoying this, but not as a game. Like everyone said it's more like an engaging book with interactivity
The only time you can get coins is near the beginning of chapter 4 when you speak with Dunning after Jay cracks the sads.

Bugger! Hyde should've used that crowbar to pry open the vending machine instead :P Actually speaking of crowbars I forgot to hide some of my stuff that I nicked, at first I thought I put away everything, except for the $20k cash (which I couldn't put back in its original place), I then proceeded down the stairs and Dunning asked me to take my belongings out, he then says something like "Oi! What's this?!", Hyde replies "I won big at the races"
Another funny moment is when you're trying to figure out who drank what wine, you knock on Summer's door and he says "It was white. An unusual blend of unique flavour and-" Hyde then interrupts and says "Don't care". He may be a rude bastard but there's an undeniable charm that you've got to admire.
I can't believe Iris actually invites Hyde into her room later on in the chapter. I was going "Okay! This is your big moment! Do something!". And he does do something, he continues being the rude bastard that he is. I know I shouldn't expect some kind of hentai-dating simulation game but the girl obviously likes him because she's been pretty persistant so far on a number of occasions.

Just finished the game, if you've been enjoying it so far the ending is worth playing on. Not in the way of a "big reveal" or twist (though i guess there is something like that in there), but something very mature, sad and heartfealt that i really haven't seen in a game (well at least MANY games) before. Upon the ending i'd say this is one of the most well-written games i've ever played.
Pity it makes you feel like falling asleep at times.

Finished! This was the US version btw people so I actually started it a couple of weeks before it came out locally
One of the most enjoyable games I've played in quite a while and that's saying a lot. Brilliant from start to finish, the only downer were the half a dozen 'Game Over' scenes I encountered. That and during the last chapter where you're having a conversation that lasts nearly an hour, and you can't save, my DS battery decides to die on me when Hyde wakes up the next morning at 8am! After an hour of scrawling text, I had to do it all over again!
Luckily the ending was worth it though, unfortunately I didn't visit the rooftop upon leaving, I didn't get loose change from Dunning and in result I didn't get anything from the vending machine. Perhaps on my next play through in the not-too-distant future I'll remember next time.

I finished it last night.
As much as some people say it needs more gameplay, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Cing should have put in less actual playing. I had a great time with this, but didn't really play it as a game, and was generally a bit annoyed by the fetch quests and unfair 'Game Over' scenarios. Essentially, I was in it entirelly for the story, which definitely delievered.

Just finished the game about 5 minutes ago.
Fantastic ending, some great characters and it really did manage the impossible by not only tying up the multitude of story threads but actually making the string of coincidences that struck Hotel Dusk on that evening seem plausible.
I'd still like to have seen it have better game design... it was a bit half-hearted in this regard. I certainly see where Jickle is coming from, the game was so non-commital in this regard I really read it as either do it properly or not at all. Jickle is going for the not at all, I'm going for the doing it properly... either way is legit.
Regardless I am very happy I went through it. I really fell in love with the characters, even old man Dunning. All up a top read... err... game. :D

I just picked up a copy of Hotel Dusk today, only just started playing but it looks like an awesome game so far. One small problem however, when i close the lid to engage sleep mode the power light blinks faster than usual, the sound stutters and the screen flashes on and off repeatedly, just wondered if anyone else has come across this. I'm playing it on a DS Lite.
When i reopen it the game is fine but each time i close it the stuttering/flashing occurs.
I have not had this issue with sleep mode on my other DS games.

Haven't finished this yet, up to chapter 6 (only play it for an hour or two at a time before sleep), and I don't really want anything spoiled, but the chick on the cover of the men's magazine sure looks like Iris!
So I shouldn't trust the Hyper review? It seemed to think it was pretty boring, but it could just be the reviewer wasn't in to story-based "games". If it's lengthy enough It'd prove to be useful to play while on the train and the like.
Jickle
04-04-2007, 12:50 AM
It's not really much of a 'play on the train' game, because you can't save mid-conversation if you get to your stop, and the game's really based entirelly around conversation. It's more of a "sit back when you've got an hour spare to delve into another chapter" sort of thing. It really is more like a book than a game.

Yep, after all it's only one magazine's opinion and everybody says you can't judge a game on 1 review alone. On Metacritic it has an average of 78% (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/hotelduskroom215?q=hotel%20dusk). Reviewers like Gamespot, RPGFan, Gamespy and 1up gave it 80%+.
It's not boring by any means, but it does contain a lot of text and plays more like an interactive book. Whilst the gameplay is a little light, it's still an addictive game and you'll be playing it from beginning to end - guaranteed :D
Pros: Well-paced mystery story, engaging characters, lots of exploration.
Cons: Mundane puzzles that aren't well integrated into the story, clunky navigation.
Bottom-line: Hotel Dusk is another good DS release from Cing. The game is entertaining, and a worthwhile purchase for any DS owner who enjoys a lot of story in their games and doesn't mind the occasional lame puzzle.
It's not really much of a 'play on the train' game, because you can't save mid-conversation if you get to your stop
Technically you can save mid-conversation, if you've finished answering 1 question and still have another couple to ask, you can return back to the map and save. Unless you're near the end of the game, you'll have a chance to quickly save if you read fast enough, or just simply close the DS and wait till you have another chance to read the rest :)

Hadn't heard much about it, other than it was the second game from Cing. I enjoyed Another Code (for about 4.5 hours before it finished), somehow Hotel Dusk didn't really perk my interest, but now that I'm playing it it's great. Up to chapter 7 I think.
Kind of slow moving at times, and you can tell they've shoved in some stuff to lengthen the story, but I'm keen to keep playing : )

Is Phoenix Wright similar? I've been really enjoying the style of game. Though I suspect Phoenix Wright is more comical and less intense story-wise.
Hmm. Phoinex is comical, but is serious when it needs to be. The twists are much, much bettter than those in dusk, and voice control is fun (but optional)It's better for shorter sesions, but is shorter (8 hours if lucky) as a whole. 2d also. Still, i've played phoinex 4 times over, whilst only played dusk through once. Still if you get phoinex and have doubts after case 1 stick with it. Final case 4 and bonus case 5 are amazing.

Just out of curiosity - What's a Phoinex?
Also, say I loved Another Code to pieces, but was kinda fazed by it's EXTREME linearity - Would I like Hotel Dusk? It didn't quite get the reviews that AC did, so is it not quite as good as AC? What do you guys think of the game in relation to AC?
Nic Xtreme

Hotel Dusk got better reviews than Another Code...
80.4% for Hotel Dusk http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/933043.asp
vs.
72.5% for Another Code http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/924898.asp
I enjoyed them both, but definitely Hotel Dusk more -- both were just as linear, but HD has a better storyline -- much better -- and brilliant characters and writing, which brings them to life!
Hotel Dusk is definitely better than Another Code.
Oh yeah, I just finished HD in 17.5hrs, and I found it to be much longer -- double the length -- so yeah, worth it!
Tukenstein

The extreme linearity of it kinda annoyed me aswell, but it was worth it for the story and cool characters. It only started to bother me about halfway through anyway, so it's no biggie : )
Great game, one of the most original experiences I've had in a while. Far, far better than Another Code. Another Code was just... the story wasn't great at all. Though it was a fair bit nicer looking.
Ending was ok, I still think there were way, way to many "coincidences" but they did do a good job of tying everything together without making it one big conspiracy.
I hated the end. The only bit I liked was the scene after the credits. It seemed a bit of a cop out, with the whole *spoiler* in the red *spoiler* saying to not *spoilerific*

I didn't do I whole lot of research before purchasing the DSi today, but I'm assuming that there is no region lock-out like the previous DS versions?

AFAIK DS games are still region free. Its any DSi specific games you have to be wary of.
Ah, excellent. I was a bit wary of that as soon as I switched on the the system for the first time and it requested the country. :p

The Last Window: Midnight Promise is a followup to Kyle Hyde's original adventure. Developed again by Cing, it's set in LA during the 1980s and will see Hyde return and possibly meet an adult Ashley Mizuki Robbins from Trace Memory. It will once again be for the DS and is due to hit Japan on January 24, 2010
You see that shiz? An adult Ashley? Sounds terribly sexy, and with the popularity of HD that's gotta make it to localised versions, right?

Too right. I remember saying that the game would have benefited from less 'gamey' elements. I was hooked on the story, not so much the puzzles.

Yea but according to reviews Another Code Wii isn't great although it could be because it's a rather niche game.
Great news to hear about the sequel to Hotel Dusk, the original was one of the few DS games I've stuck with.

But the developers don't exist anymore.
If the game makes a profit, then it will be encouraging the larger publishers to continue with this sort of action in not supporting small-time developers when they need the help.
Therefore, by paying money for the game, you are hurting not only the developer of Last Window, but all small-time developers across the world.
You make me sick.

If the game makes a profit it will encourage the larger publishers to fund further development of more games like this, through seeking out the talent that made the game in the first place. Cing the company might be bankrupt, but the talent is still there ... if there's a market for it, it will encourage more of these types of games.

I can't think of a rational reason someone would pirate a game for any of the reasons you listed unless they were going to pirate it anyway. People who pirate games to stick it to DRM are lame and are deluding themselves to the fact that they're tightasses who don't want to pay for the game.
