He.. kinda read it when I loaded the page. Anyway, nice work.
Also, regarding bp, I found out that if you beat the tower tycoon *who appears at the 21st and 49th consecutive battles*, you get 20bp.
And, you can also get the earthquake TM via pokemon battle revolution for 12,000 points *I'm assuming that it's easier to get points in that game, as its one of the cheaper things you can buy*

No. Save, stick 'em in daycare 'till they're level 10 or 20 (depending on how accurate you want the results) then check their IVs. Then reset.

Erm i'm assuming that you mean the Ice, Fire and Thunder fangs moves here? If thats the case then you just give a heart scale to the move tutor in Pastoria. If you use Serebii.net Pokedex, the moves with the level "-" are moves that the move tutor can teach.

Should I be worried I still haven't passed the 8th gym yet? I'm just bumming around too much, I can't seem to muster the effort to go on with the story.
I don't know. I can't remember if I found the story that compelling or not, now, I think the main thing that drove me to get through the story/Elite 4 was the fact I'd be able to migrate my pokemon from Fire Red and Ruby. :P
I've probably gotten into the game a lot more after getting all that out of the way with learning about EVs and thinking about movesets etc.
Edit: Javer, I don't know if you're looking for a ground pokemon or just a pokemon that can use EQ in general. But in terms of ground pokemon Dugtrio is one of the fastest and learns it through levelling, however its other stats aren't anything to write home about. Maybe you could go with Garchomp.
Javer
23-07-2007, 04:52 PM
Ground pokemon I am fine with, Garchomp is looking to cover that slot but i was wondering if there are many others. I am looking at a couple of additions to my team but they could suffer against a speedy EQer. However, Garchomp seems to be the biggest threat in that case, and the Land Shark is already a force to be reckoned with anyway.

You should check the Pokemon of the Week (http://www.serebii.net/potw/) section. There's a small section at the bottom of each pokemon with recommended contest moves as well as nature etc. Keep in mind that the data are from 3rd gen games but i've been using what they have recommended and so far so good. I just want to do the contests for something besides battling. And use some Pokémon I like that aren't suited for battling either.
Emilbus
23-07-2007, 11:46 PM
Don't think you need to complete all the contest to get into that spa with the massages, just need a team with alot of ribbons. There's alot of easy ones that you can get. However if you do complete all the contest your trainer card does change colours :0 (http://www.serebii.net/diamondpearl/trainercard.shtml)

So ribbons, massages and more colours.

An entertaining account of Gabe from Penny-Arcade's foray into the world of Pokemon Tournaments.
So I ended up attending one of the Gamestop Pokemon tournaments on Saturday. When I told Kara that I wanted to go she told me it would just be a bunch of little kids. I explained to her that Pokemon was no longer just a kids game. That a large number of men my age played Pokemon now. I told her I'd probably be surrounded by guys my age who took it way more seriously than I did. I'm really glad she decided not to go with me. As it turns out I was the oldest person in the tournament by roughly twenty years and the only one not wearing a shirt with Pikachu on it.
I showed up at the Alderwood mall Gamestop and entered my name. As the little kids poured in I became less and less convinced I should participate. The little boys with their Pokemon backpacks and the girls with tiny Pokeballs in their hair seemed to assume I was just someones Dad rather than their competition. It was actually really cool to see how much these kids love Pokemon. I've been so into it recently that I think I'd forgotten I should be having fun. With my pages of hand written math and charts of carefully plotted out EV training regiments I actually felt sort of dirty. These little kids were showing me teams comprised not of statistically optimal Pokemon but of their favorites. A little girl talked to me for five minutes about why she loved Kyogre so much. When she asked why I used Rotom I couldn't bring myself to tell her that his ghost/electric type meant he had a lot of immunities while giving him some surprising moves that should allow me to cripple sweepers with status effects but still fight off any Dark types I encounter. "I think he's cute." I explained. She smiled and nodded as though this was the reason she had expected to hear.
I noticed one of the kids there was actually quite a bit older than the rest of the group. Still probably half my age, but he towered over his opponents. I watched as he struck up conversations with the other children, inspecting their Pokemon and always finding them lacking. "I've EV trained my entire party." he said to a few of the kids who obviously had no idea what that meant. He showed of his multiple "shinies" to a couple of very impressed young men before explaining that he wasn't going to use them in the tournament because it just wouldn't be fair to everyone else. No, he would dominate them with a mixed bag of EV trained legendaries and obscure all stars culled from every single incarnation of the series. He was essentially being a little Douche.
I had just decided to pull myself out of the tournament in order to let the kids have their fun when Cory, who was running the show told me he'd matched me up against the little loudmouth in the first round. I figured I might have a chance to take him out and then none of the other kids would have to face him. So I stayed in and when it came time to play I synced up my DS and loaded my fairly mundane crew. It worked out that we were standing on the wrong sides of the television so his team showed up on my side and mine on his. The crowd of kids around me cheered and congratulated me on such an impressive roster. I explained that those were his and that mine were on the other side. "You really need to play more." one of the younger boys instructed. I agreed and selected my three Pokemon to take into battle. A few of the kids behind me would shake their heads in disgust as my finger hovered over each possible selection. My opponent, in what I can only assume was an attempt to show off grossly underestimated this old man's skillz. He tried to pull off an extremely risky strategy involving the near sacrifice of his first Pokemon for a "baton pass" maneuver and a quick stat boost to his second in line. This failed miserably as the aforementioned Rotom I pulled in did not give two shits about anything he hit me with. Once I'd taken him out I moved to the next round but really had no desire to continue. I played my opponent but then bowed out and gave him a free pass onto the next round. The young man I played earlier kept approaching me and telling me he could have beat me easy, he just used the wrong Pokemon. I nodded, yes well that's sort of the whole game.
I watched a bit more of the tournament and I was really impressed with the sportsmanship of the kids. I've been watching the cartoon with Gabe and it really stresses the importance of winning and losing graciously. Each of these kids when they lost shook the others hand and thanked them for the match. The winners complimented the losers Pokemon and strategies while impressing on them that it really was a very close game. I know they weren't my kids but as a thirty year old gamer with a kid of my own I could not help but be extremely proud of all of them. Their passion for the game was totally infectious and I've decided to throw away my spreadsheets. I'm no longer hatching five eggs at a time in order to find babies with the optimal natures and stats. I've also brought Beautifly back into my team. She's not very tough, but I like her, she's pretty.

Aww, man did you see the e-mail a kid sent him in reply to that post?
I just got this email and I had to share it with you all.
Dear Mister Gabe,
Hi! My name is Nausica (gnaw-sik-ca), I am twelve years old and I love pokemon. My mom got me the Pokemon Pearl for my DS and I love love love it, it is probably my favorite game. I heard about the pokemon tournament at Gamestop and really wanted to go, but I am really shy so I wasn't going to, but my parents talked me into it and said it would be a good for me and I would have fun.
So I went and it seemed at first like it would be fun, there were alot of really nice kids there who all loved pokemon like me, it was really fun showing off my team of Evee's and seeing what other people liked too.
Then the older guys came, I dunno how old they were but they were much older then most of the other kids there, they pretty much ruined the fun of it for everyone else there. I guess they weren't really mean, but how they acted sounded alot like the boy you described, that you had a chance to beat. But unfortunately for the kids at the tournament I went too, there wasn't a nice guy like you to set an example for them. Needless to say most of us there didn't have a good chance against them, (I never knew what the special point things were even), and they never really told us nice job or anything. The guy that got me laughed when he saw my line up of Evees.
So afterwards I really didn't wanna play pokemon very much, and I thought I was gonna stop playing, cause I only really play to have fun, not to beat everyone else. Then today my mom (who is a big fan) showed me what you wrote, and it made me feel a million times better!!! :D
I couldn't believe I almost let some jerks take away my love of pokemon!
So I really just wanted to tell you thank you Mister Gabe! What you said ment alot to me and my evees!! You are a great person and I wish I could have been at your tournament to meet you!
Have a great day!!
Sincerely
Nausica
ps! I'm naming my next boy evee after you ^_^
I think I'll probably be smiling for the next week thanks to this.

Its always been like that. Since metagame has been played online with largely Text-based live applications most of those more in the know have kept themselves online. Clearly, following Gabe's thrashing, this older kid is someone who failed at the online metagame and decided to try to let himself feel big by beating a bunch of kids.

Question:
Two identical pokemans, at level 50. From here, one is EV trained and one is not. They both participate in a scaled lvl 50 battle at a later date. Does one have higher stats than the other? I'm assuming the answer is yes, which means I should keep training for extra EVs after they reach 50.

I don't think so. WhyMe mentioned in the tournie rules thread that there is a cap of how many EVs you can have at a certain level.

Natrak
26-07-2007, 06:37 PM
Budew might not be terrific, but I'm sure you'll find its evolution, Roselia somewhat more useful (which in turn evolves into Roserade with the use of a Shiny Stone). Unfortunately, I'm not sure of any other grass pokemon you can catch at the point of game I assume you're in (ie. early, considering you're using a Budew.).

OK -- the simple answer to that is yes, the EV trained one will have higher stats.
Obviously, there is a cap on how extraordinarily high one stat can be on each respective level, but what's happening there is that one pokemon is now EV trained, and as such when the recalculation occurs back to level 50, one pokemon is higher in stats than the other.
You see, the cap on that stat is based on 1) # of EVs received 2) their IV and 3) the nature.
So, assuming the two pokemon are identical as you've said, they would have identical stats due to their natures and IVs, but whichever stats are EV trained will be higher than the other Pokemon's stat, simply because it hasn't got those extra 127 (cumulative maximum over all stats) to be distributed over its 99 levels.

Ah, so you're a fair way into it. Well in the Great Marsh you can catch Carnivine (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/455.shtml) which should prove to be more useful than your Budew at present.

I wouldn't be too intimidated by it, to be honest. The stat gains aren't that big and I think you're pretty capable of competing with your knowledge of move-sets, strats and typing etc.
I honestly doubt, for instance, that I'd beat you with any measure of ease just because some of my Poke's have been trained deliberately in a specific stat. I'd expect your knowledge to come out the victor.
In fact, I'm expecting to do pretty terribly but intend to compete because it should be pretty enjoyable regardless.

I fully intend to enter the tourney, by the way. It should be good fun, I enjoy battling even if I'm getting swept. :P

As I posted somewhere else, this is what I know could easily beat me:
Alakazam @ Choice Specs, Heracross @ Choice Scarf, Salamence @ Choice Specs, Starmie @ Life Orb, Infernape @ ...?, Metagross @ ...?
But yeah, that team covers all of my weaknesses to pwn me. In fact, that's also a team I'm considering developing to some extent!

I should lone you my Weavile. After breeding one for 3 days I got a nice Jolly one with 31 IV's in speed.... starmie can't counter it at all.
Nic Xtreme
29-07-2007, 01:42 AM
Yeah you know what does but?

I'm probably going to get a Weavile. My favourite thing in Pokemon is speed. I think it's integral to winning.

Bring your weavile counter along to a battle I say. Im well setup to deal with it.... You'll be shocked to see my Lucario. My other starmie counter. It may be slower. But none of starmie's attackings can 1 hit KO it and it can KO starmie ;)

Y'see, Lucario hasn't got me scared -- I've battled many of them and always beat them. It's Weavile. It's a fast, bitch of a pokemon. And while I have two counters that are both faster that it -- no, three -- it still is SE against 4 or 5 pokes in my team!
We shall battle another day, so you can prove your point, and put me to the floor!

The saddest part is, not so much with Pokemon, but with any video game in general -- the above statement probably applies to some people - however a minority it may be - in this world.

Okay, so you've just gotten the seventh badge. You should be able to go to Lake Acuity where there are two Team Galactics out the front, fight them, then enter Lake Acuity and you'll have to fight another person from Team Galactic, by memory. Once that's done it's time to go to Veilstone city to take on the Team Galactic HQ.

basically what Natrak said without the battles. the two guys out front should have separated from the entrance. Inside your Rival will have lost to Jupiter who then leaves saying not to go to their HQ. After talking to your rival that's where you go.
My one question is have you done the stuff at the other lakes?

Yeah, great match! Always a pleasure.
On a side note, I'm planning on replacing 501.075 with *something else* at the moment. :P
Edit: And in the meantime I might toy with a different strategy for 501. :D
Nic Xtreme
29-07-2007, 11:44 PM
To be honest, I'd have:
- Choral
- 501.075
- Asator Jr.
- ...that thing that ALWAYS kill Salamence
Take out Torterra and Blakkheim, IMO...
Now, add something to counter your fighting weakness --> I recommend Zen Headbutting Metagross, Slowbro, Alakazam, or Skarmory.
PLUS! Slowbro OR Skarmory not only cover your fighting weakness, but also help set up someone else ;)
...that's just my opinion...don't listen to me about "covering weaknesses" -- I have a 3x fire weakness!
Nic Xtreme
29-07-2007, 11:47 PM

Natrak
29-07-2007, 11:51 PM
- ...that thing that ALWAYS kill Salamence
You mean Jotun? :P
I quite like my Torterra, and its present moveset/item combo, but it hasn't been specifically EV trained (just to save confusion for those scoring at home, his EVs are maxed, though) with the kind of nature I'd want. The same goes for Blakkheim, but I'm not as inclined to hold onto it as I am Torterra.
I have wanted to train a Metagross for a while (a shiny Metagross is my dream pokemon :P ), and I migrated a Beldum to my cart for that purpose...so maybe.
Nic Xtreme
29-07-2007, 11:55 PM
Yeah, I must admit Torterra is pretty freaking bulky! High HP + Defense ftw! He just doesn't seem to do much...
In that respect though, that's only vs. my team, I'm sure he is much better in other matches!
Yeah, Jotun is its name!
You know, I realised that doing what I think you're going to do to 501.075 makes it extremely-mutha-farking powerful, and I shake in my boots eternally.
My Metagross has come in handy in many a match, and I'll be the first to say that when he gets an Agility on him, I've had him sweep many a team! when his moves don't consistently miss...darn inaccuracy!
Natrak
30-07-2007, 12:02 AM
I'm not sure what you think I'm going to do, but let's just say it's a change that might also benefit other members of my team. :P
Nic Xtreme
30-07-2007, 12:06 AM
Oh, that's all fine and dandy, because it wasn't what I was thinking.
You see, you are clearly referring to either Thunder Wave OR Trick Room, both of which also benefit two members of my team also :D
I could be wrong though... >_>
Natrak
30-07-2007, 12:36 AM
Can't get anything by you, huh? :P
I'm not sure what you were thinking, the only really remote thing I can think of is maybe something like Magic Coat, but I'm not sure how that move actually works. Damn you. :P
Nic Xtreme
30-07-2007, 12:46 AM
Lol, I shan't ever dare to divulge what I was thinking, as it would harm the minds of children everywhere.
Sorry.
Of course, your idea is also EXCELLENT! And from my complex analysis of your team both of those options would work well considering the serious speed-tardation your team suffers from.
Also! Choral could potentially double its speed AND attacking power at the same with a single move, you know? Rather than just use, what you use...
Natrak
30-07-2007, 12:55 AM
If I'm thinking of the same move you're thinking of for Choral I'm afraid it's useless for the moveset I'm running and the stats I've trained it in.
And can I at least have a hint in regards to what you were thinking of for 501? Come on, I gave you a hint as to what I was actually thinking! :P

I don't like your chances of coercing a battle out of Dekar just yet, I've tried a few times before and it's proved fruitless. I think it's mostly because his team is a work in progress at this point.
Nic Xtreme
30-07-2007, 01:21 AM
Indeed, I think that's the whole shebang of what's going on.

I require assistance. (Pick which move they should know)
A Torterra; Wood Hammer or Stone Edge?
Wood Hammer gets the STAB, but Stone-Edge deals with flying types.
A Slowbro; Psychic or Ice beam?
Psychic gets STAB, but Ice beam can deal with pesky Dragon-Dancers.

At this rate it will probably be an uber taking the E4 but I would really like to come up with a competitive water type (aside from Starmie, everyone uses Starmie >_>), although due to typing the only one without a glaring typing weakness in the metagame would be Kingdra and I refuse to use it.

No they're not. One Pokemon may rely on another for Weather effects, Aromatherapy or, the most important, type coverage.
Thus, I like each of my Pokemon to be able to fight off a wide variety of Pokemon and types on their own.
