So I was perusing though my Giant Bomb feed list and I found an article about this upcoming third-person shooter called Spec Ops: The Line. It's set in a sandstorm-ravage Dubai and you play Captain Martin Walker, sent in with a Delta Force bravo team to track down US Army Colonel John Konrad, who went missing after staying behind against orders to protect the citizens who could not evacuate the city.
The premise is rather intriguing and I really hope that they can pull off the psychological aspect they're talking about as well as using the terrain as a weapon in battle. The E3 2010 trailer is out and has a pretty cool soundtrack and a pretty heavy, almost post-apocalyptic flavour to it. So far, the only release date they have is for 2011 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. It's actually a new entry into an old franchise from back in the PSX days. The game was one of the 'big reveals' from the 09 VGAs. Honestly, it'll have to be pretty excellent to get a purchase from me. I have no attachment to the the Spec Ops name and at the end of the day it's just the result of another publisher clamouring to get a slice of the Modern Warfare audience.

Yeah, I remember that Hyper had an article about it a couple of issues back and I found the concept to be interesting. The Giant Bomb article was the one that really started to sell it to me as a game. I had no idea it was even part of a long-running series until I started researching it for this thread. While there's no demo or press impressions from actual playtime, my gut feeling is that this game at least has potential. Whether it will end up realising that potential is another matter entirely.

Well edited trailer, though. Great choice of music, it did a great job setting a mood.

Totally. Reminded me a little of Terminator Salvation, if only because that's the most recent movie (that I know of) to use that song.

Brown, guns, 3rd person, cover system... getting pretty bored of all this.

So it turns out that they're still working on this game and Giant Bomb's Alex Navarro got to play it for a couple of hours. My interest in this game has just been reinvigorated.

Demo's now up on XBLM and PSN.
FYI: if you listen closely at the demo menu, you'll hear what I'm fairly sure is a snippet of Jimi Hendrix playing The Star Spangled Banner. Last edited by Shorty; 10-05-2012 at 05:34 AM. |
