Default Playstation 3 as a Blu-Ray player

I'm looking at BRD players at the moment. In the shorter term, I'd be using an HDMI-DVI connection to a monitor and would also require stereo RCA outputs on the player (white/red) for my widdle speakers.

A few $100-ish players would suit this just fine, and I'm not keen to produce an extra $250 on top of that for a PS3 Slim, though there's clearly some advantages. One is the wireless Internet capabilities.

How useful / desirable is it to connect your BRD player to the Internet? Forget for a moment anything gaming related.

Here's a review of the original PS3 with some notes on its Blu ray performance.

My PS3 is essentially a glorified Bluray player and I haven't noticed anything special happening when I watch Blurays while connected to the net.

Maybe that just shows how perfectly integrated all those amazing net features really are - you don't even notice them.

I remember reading that some bluray's will require a firmware update to the player and the ps3 being a net connected system would be one to update, this was way back in the hd-DVD / bluray war days. I don't remember reading any benefits to the consumer though and it read like basic drm drivel.

I cbf'ed looking this up though...

Since I have to go out today to get Witcher 2 anyway, considering getting this: $116 from Big W with Avatar packed in.

It's still one of the best (cheap) BD players out there, plus the upscaling for dvds and many many cutoms options (like turning on/off pan and scan) and others mean that if you are a movie fan, and want to watch films (or tv) in their native formats, then it beats the pants off of the other cheap players.

Plus the remote is a million times better than many others (or just use the controller).

Also the "resume" function stores multiple movies, I don't know how many, but I've had asa many as say three different films I've watched say half of, then played games and other movies, then watched the second half of the first three films say a week later, and it just resumes right where I left off.

Buy a ps3. Its reasonably cheap and recieves constant Firmware updates automatically. Not many do that without more hassle if any.

I suppose if you enjoy watching half a movie and then doing something else (???) that's a good feature, but I doubt it's all that high on the priority list for most.

Anyways, I think that online features on a Bluray are probably about as amazing as the picture disc "feature".
