Learning to develop a game is in my bucket list, although I've always considered it much too technical to pursue. But it's still something that arouses my curiosity.
I found this interesting site about game engines: http://nuverian.net/2011/01/17/the-b...me-developers/ Anyone have any experience with any of these tools and can recommend one over another? |

For making 2D games, Game Maker is the best all rounder . The free version is fairly powerful on it's own and it's relatively easy to learn. There's no need to write any code (there is scripting functionality in the full version) but you learn some basic programming concepts. A number of prominent indie games have been made using it like Dustforce and Spelunky.
For more genre specific tools, Adventure Game Studio seems to be the most popular for adventure games. I haven't tried it though. RPG Maker is fantastic for JRPGs and is probably the easiest game maker to learn. These programs aren't very good outside of their respective genres though. I haven't used any 3D Engines but Unity and Unreal Development Kit sound like popular choices.
