It’s rare that a movie based on a game is good. It’s just as rare that a movie based on gaming is good. All too often they seem to have been written by people who have never played a game in their lives, but that isn’t the case with Disney’s latest blockbuster, Wreck-It Ralph, a loving tribute to gaming, from early arcade classics through to modern AAA blockbusters. Superheroes are hot properties at the moment, and thanks to the massive success of the Iron Man movies and The Avengers, Iron Man is definitely one of the most popular comic book properties floating around at the moment. Hayao Miyazaki, one of the true legends of anime wrote, produced and directed Kiki’s Delivery Service in 1989, but despite the film being nearly a quarter of a century old, it’s still as vibrant, lovely and heart-warming as ever. Telling the story of a young witch who spends a year living in town and must use her magical abilities to make a living, Kiki’s Delivery Service is at once a warm comedy, a bittersweet coming of age tale and a wonderful parable of growing up, relying on yourself and finding your own feet. Even if you’ve seen it before it’s definitely worth watching again.

It has been a month of change here at the Hyper Bunker. We’ve welcomed a few new faces into the fold, with Brittany Vincent, a new American correspondent penning her first feature for us and Zac Naoum joining the Next Media gaming family as our new intern, coffee boy and all around whipping post. Dan Hindes from PCPP and I haven’t made him weep as yet, but we’ve been gentle for his first few weeks, lulling him into a false sense of security before we hit him with the full force of our combined malevolence. I’m also trying to make it a condition of his contract that he officially changes his name to Zak McKracken, but so far my demands have fallen on deaf and uncaring ears.
It has also been a month of preparation, with requests for E3 media passes sent, similar requests to PAX Aus completed, multiple Visa forms filled out for the US and even more requests put through to management not to book a twin share room for Hyper and PCPP for either event. I don’t trust Hindes’ roving hands at the best of times.
